Tesla surpassed Toyota as the world’s most valuable automaker by market capitalization in 2020.
Tesla’s share price rose dramatically during 2020 as investors anticipated rapid growth in electric vehicles, battery technology, and software. In July, its market value moved above Toyota’s, even though Toyota produced far more vehicles and had a much longer operating history.
The comparison illustrates why market capitalization is not the same as sales, production, assets, or profit. It represents investors’ collective valuation of future prospects, and those expectations can produce very different rankings from current operating scale.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and delivered its first production car, the Roadster, in 2008. Its later Model 3 and Model Y helped it move from a niche electric-car maker toward mass-market production.
