Tesla briefly joined the $1 trillion market-capitalization club in October 2021.
Tesla’s market capitalization passed $1 trillion on October 25, 2021, after its share price jumped following news that Hertz had ordered 100,000 electric vehicles. The order was viewed as evidence that electric cars were moving beyond early adopters and into large-scale rental and fleet markets.
Tesla was the first automaker to reach a $1 trillion valuation. Its investors were pricing not only current vehicle sales but also expectations about future electric-vehicle production, battery technology, charging infrastructure, software, and autonomous-driving services.
A market-cap milestone does not mean Tesla had earned $1 trillion in sales or profits. It represents the total market value of its outstanding shares. Tesla’s valuation has remained notably volatile because investors have assigned substantial value to future growth as well as its existing automobile business.
