Alphabet owns Google and became one of the first technology firms to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Alphabet was created in 2015 as the holding company for Google and several other businesses. Google remains its largest operation, spanning internet search, online advertising, YouTube, Android, and cloud computing.
Alphabet crossed the $1 trillion market-cap threshold in January 2020. Its valuation reflected the scale and profitability of Google’s advertising business, along with investor expectations for growth in cloud services, artificial intelligence, and other ventures.
Alphabet is often confused with Google because Google is the company’s best-known subsidiary. The corporate parent’s stock is listed under the ticker symbols GOOGL and GOOG, while Google itself is not a separately traded public company.
