Tesla became the first automaker valued at more than $1 trillion on the stock market.
Tesla passed the $1 trillion market-cap mark in October 2021 after its shares rose sharply. Investors valued the company not only as a vehicle manufacturer but also for its battery technology, software, charging network, and expected growth in electric transportation.
The milestone was notable because Tesla’s valuation exceeded that of much larger traditional automakers by market capitalization, even though many established manufacturers produced more vehicles and generated greater revenue. Market value reflects expected future performance rather than current production alone.
Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, with Elon Musk joining soon afterward as an early major investor and later becoming chief executive. Its Model 3 helped expand the company’s sales beyond the luxury segment.
