The Tesla Model Y became the world’s best-selling car of any powertrain in 2023.
Tesla’s compact electric crossover combined the Model 3’s drivetrain with a taller body, a large rear cargo area, and optional third-row seating. Its global sales reached roughly 1.2 million vehicles in 2023, according to industry estimates cited by major automotive analysts.
This achievement was notable because the Model Y competed not only with electric cars but also with petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles worldwide. Tesla produced the model in the United States, China, Germany, and later other locations, helping it reach multiple markets.
The Model Y is often confused with the Model 3 because they share much of their engineering. The Model 3 is a sedan, while the Model Y is a crossover utility vehicle. The closely related Model 3 remained one of the world’s best-selling electric cars, but the Model Y led all vehicle types in 2023.
