Which electric race car won the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb outright?
Answer
Volkswagen I.D. R
Answer
Volkswagen I.D. R
The Volkswagen I.D. R won the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb outright.
Driven by Romain Dumas, the electric prototype completed the 12.42-mile course in 7 minutes 57.148 seconds on 24 June 2018. That time won the event and broke the previous overall record set by Sébastien Loeb in a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak.
The I.D. R used two electric motors and a lightweight carbon-fiber structure. Volkswagen developed it specifically for hill-climb competition rather than as a road-legal production car. Its immediate electric torque and ability to deploy power at high altitude were major advantages.
The result is often confused with later electric records at Pikes Peak. The 2018 run was the first time an electric vehicle set the event’s outright record, not merely the electric-class record.
