Which electric car was named European Car of the Year for 2019?

The story behind the answer

The Jaguar I-Pace was named European Car of the Year for 2019.

The I-Pace is a battery-electric crossover SUV produced by Jaguar Land Rover. It won the 2019 European Car of the Year award, becoming the first Jaguar to receive that title. The jury consisted of automotive journalists from European countries who assessed cars introduced during the relevant eligibility period.

Jaguar launched the I-Pace in 2018. It uses two permanent-magnet synchronous motors, one on each axle, giving it all-wheel drive. Its lithium-ion battery has a 90 kWh gross capacity, and the motors provide a combined output of 294 kW in the original specification.

The I-Pace is sometimes grouped with the Audi e-tron because both are premium electric SUVs introduced in the same period, but they are different models from different manufacturers. The award is also distinct from the World Car of the Year title, which has separate rules and winners.
