Tesla briefly exceeded a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021.
Tesla’s share price rose above the level needed for a $1 trillion valuation on October 25, 2021, after news that Hertz had ordered 100,000 electric vehicles. The milestone made Tesla the first automaker to reach a market capitalization of $1 trillion.
Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, while Elon Musk joined soon afterward as a major early investor and later became its best-known leader. The company’s Roadster, Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y helped move electric cars from a niche product toward mass-market adoption.
Market capitalization can change rapidly because it depends on the share price. It is also different from vehicle production, revenue, or profit. Tesla’s valuation reflected investor expectations about electric vehicles, batteries, charging infrastructure, software, and possible future businesses—not merely the number of cars it had already sold.
