Which electric car introduced the modular MEB platform used by Volkswagen Group?
Answer
Volkswagen ID.3
Answer
Volkswagen ID.3
The Volkswagen ID.3 introduced Volkswagen Group’s modular MEB platform for battery-electric cars.
Volkswagen presented the ID.3 in 2019, and it entered production in Zwickau, Germany, later that year. The compact hatchback was the first production model based on the company’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix, known by its German abbreviation MEB. The platform was designed specifically for electric vehicles rather than adapted from a combustion-engine architecture.
The ID.3 uses a rear-mounted electric motor and a battery positioned low in the floor. This layout helps provide a long wheelbase relative to the car’s exterior length and lowers the centre of gravity. Battery options were offered with different capacities, including 45, 58, and 77 kWh usable figures depending on version and market.
The Volkswagen ID.4 followed as a larger electric SUV on the same platform. The Audi Q4 e-tron also uses MEB, but it was not the platform’s first production model. The Porsche Taycan uses a different architecture.
