Which electric car introduced Tesla’s first factory-installed heat pump for cabin efficiency?

The story behind the answer

The Tesla Model Y introduced Tesla’s first factory-installed heat pump for cabin efficiency.

Tesla equipped the Model Y with a heat-pump system that can move heat into the passenger compartment instead of creating all cabin heat through resistive elements. In cold conditions, this can reduce energy consumption and preserve more driving range, although real-world performance depends on temperature, humidity, driving speed, and climate settings.

The Model Y began customer deliveries in 2020. Its heat-pump assembly includes a distinctive valve-and-plumbing arrangement that Tesla enthusiasts nicknamed the “Octovalve.” Later versions of other Tesla models adopted related thermal-management improvements.

The Model 3 used resistive cabin heating in its earlier configuration, which is why it is often incorrectly named as the first Tesla with a heat pump. A heat pump does not generate free energy; it transfers heat and still consumes electricity, but it can do so more efficiently than direct resistance heating.
