Which electric car became the first battery-electric vehicle to win MotorTrend’s Car of the Year?

The story behind the answer

The Tesla Model S became the first battery-electric vehicle to win MotorTrend’s Car of the Year award, in 2013.

MotorTrend selected the Model S after evaluating it against competing new cars using criteria including advancement in design, efficiency, safety, performance, and value. The award marked a major point in the acceptance of battery-electric vehicles as full-size alternatives to conventional luxury cars.

Tesla introduced the Model S in 2012 as a five-door electric liftback. Its skateboard-style layout placed the battery low beneath the passenger compartment, while the absence of a combustion engine created additional storage space at the front. The car was designed for long-distance use and rapid charging rather than only short urban trips.

The result is distinct from MotorTrend’s separate awards for SUVs, trucks, and other categories. It also differs from the North American Car of the Year award, which is judged by a different organization and panel.
