Flipkart was launched by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal in 2007.
The two founders were former Amazon employees who started Flipkart as an online bookstore in Bengaluru, India. The company later expanded from books into electronics, fashion, appliances, groceries and other categories.
Flipkart is often described as one of the companies that helped establish large-scale online retail in India. Its growth was supported by innovations such as cash on delivery, which addressed concerns among customers who were not yet comfortable paying online.
A common mix-up is confusing Flipkart with Myntra. Myntra was founded separately as a fashion-focused online retailer and was acquired by Flipkart in 2014. Walmart acquired a majority stake in Flipkart in 2018.
