Zaandam hosted Europe’s first McDonald’s restaurant in 1971.
The restaurant opened on August 21, 1971, on Vermiljoenweg in Zaandam, a city in North Holland just north of Amsterdam. It was developed through Family Food N.V., a joint venture between McDonald’s and Dutch supermarket company Albert Heijn. Franchisee Jan Sybesma led the operation.
Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht are common guesses because they are larger or more internationally prominent Dutch cities. However, the first European outlet was specifically in Zaandam. The original location later changed hands after Albert Heijn ended the joint venture in 1975, and it was eventually rebranded rather than remaining a McDonald’s restaurant.
Zaandam’s opening was part of McDonald’s unusually busy international expansion in 1971. The chain also opened its first Asian restaurant in Tokyo’s Ginza district and its first Oceania outlet in Yagoona, Australia. A later Dutch milestone was the country’s first McDrive, opened at Huis ter Heide in 1987.
