Which drummer was a core member of Bob Marley and the Wailers?

The story behind the answer

Carlton Barrett was a core drummer in Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Barrett, nicknamed “Carlton Santa,” played alongside his brother Aston “Family Man” Barrett, the group’s bassist. Their tightly linked rhythm section became a defining part of the Wailers’ sound, combining reggae’s characteristic bass emphasis with steady, syncopated drumming.

Carlton joined the Wailers during their development into an internationally touring band and performed on many important recordings. His playing can be heard on albums including Catch a Fire, Burnin’, Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration, Exodus, and Uprising.

He is sometimes confused with other major Jamaican drummers such as Sly Dunbar, who worked with many reggae artists but was not the Wailers’ principal drummer. Carlton Barrett died in Kingston in 1987.
