Tommy Ramone played on the Ramones’ first three studio albums before leaving the band in 1978.
Born Erdélyi Tamás in Budapest, Tommy became the group’s original drummer when the Ramones formed in New York in 1974. His precise, economical drumming helped define the band’s short, fast songs and tightly controlled sound. He also contributed to the group’s early songwriting and production.
The three albums featuring him are Ramones (1976), Leave Home (1977), and Rocket to Russia (1977). He left the performing lineup in 1978 and was replaced by Marky Ramone. Tommy later worked as a producer, including on the Replacements’ album Tim.
A common mix-up is confusing Tommy Ramone with Johnny, Joey, or Dee Dee, all of whom adopted the same surname as part of the band’s shared stage identity. Tommy was the drummer, not the band’s bassist or guitarist.
