André Lagache shared the first Le Mans overall win with René Léonard in 1923. The pair drove a Chenard-Walcker Type U3 15CV Sport to first place in the inaugural 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The race took place on 26–27 May 1923 over a roughly 17.26-kilometre road circuit. In difficult rain and muddy conditions, their Chenard-Walcker completed 128 laps, finishing ahead of a second Chenard-Walcker crew.

A common wrinkle is that the 1923 event was also the opening round of the three-year Rudge-Whitworth Triennial Cup. Under that separate competition’s distance-handicap rules, another car led the interim classification. Nevertheless, Lagache and Léonard are conventionally recognized as the first winners of the Le Mans 24 Hours itself.

Lagache was the team’s leading driver and set the race’s fastest lap. He and Léonard later won the 24 Hours of Spa in 1925, again driving for Chenard-Walcker.
