Dan Gurney gave Porsche its only Formula One World Championship race win in 1962.
Gurney won the French Grand Prix at Rouen-Les-Essarts on 8 July 1962, driving Porsche's 804. It was his first World Championship Formula One victory and Porsche's first—and only—win as a constructor in a championship race. He completed 54 laps and finished one lap ahead of Tony Maggs's Cooper.
The victory came after a race of attrition. Ferrari withdrew because of industrial action in Italy, while leading contenders such as Jim Clark and Graham Hill encountered mechanical problems. Gurney had qualified sixth, but inherited the lead when Hill's BRM retired late in the race and then kept the Porsche running reliably.
The result is sometimes confused with Porsche's later Formula One involvement as an engine supplier. Porsche returned as a factory team in 1962, but its 804 project lasted only that season. Gurney's win therefore remains a unique entry in Porsche's constructor record, even though the company later supplied engines to other teams.
