Which dragon does Bard kill in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Bard kills Smaug in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Smaug is a fire-drake who seized the Lonely Mountain and its treasure from the Dwarves of Erebor. He drove the Dwarves into exile and destroyed the nearby town of Dale. Decades later, Thorin Oakenshield leads an expedition to reclaim the mountain, with Bilbo Baggins serving as the company’s burglar.

Bilbo discovers that Smaug has one vulnerable area: a bare patch in the dragon’s otherwise armored underside. After Smaug attacks Lake-town, the thrush Roäc’s kind helps reveal this weakness to Bard, a descendant of the rulers of Dale. Bard uses the Black Arrow to strike Smaug and bring him down.

The dragon’s death does not end the story. It triggers a struggle over the treasure and helps lead to the Battle of the Five Armies. Smaug is distinct from Glaurung and Ancalagon, who belong to Tolkien’s earlier First Age stories.
