Which document’s adoption in 1776 does America250 commemorate?

The story behind the answer

America250 commemorates the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration on July 4, 1776. The document announced that the Thirteen Colonies regarded themselves as free and independent states rather than colonies subject to the Kingdom of Great Britain.

The Declaration did not serve as the United States Constitution. The Constitution was written and signed in 1787, more than a decade later, while the Articles of Confederation provided an earlier framework for the new states from 1781 until 1789.

The Declaration contains an explanation of the colonies’ decision, a list of grievances against King George III, and statements about natural and political rights. Its anniversary became the foundation for the national Fourth of July holiday and the 2026 America250 observance.
