Which document’s adoption does America250 commemorate as the founding anniversary of the United States?

America250 commemorates the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence.

The Second Continental Congress approved the document on July 4, 1776, announcing that the Thirteen Colonies regarded themselves as free and independent states rather than colonies subject to Great Britain. That adoption date is the basis for the 250th-anniversary observance in 2026.

The Declaration explained the colonies’ reasons for separation and presented a statement of political principles and grievances against King George III. Thomas Jefferson was its primary author, working with the Committee of Five and incorporating revisions made by Congress.

The document is often confused with the Constitution, which created the federal government in 1787, and the Articles of Confederation, which served as the first national framework. Neither document is the direct anniversary marker for America250.
