Usually abbreviated JCW, John Cooper Works is Mini’s performance marque and tuning division. It grew from the legacy of John Cooper, the racing-car constructor who recognized the original Mini’s competition potential and helped create the Mini Cooper with designer Alec Issigonis and BMC.

The modern John Cooper Works company was founded in 2002 by Michael Cooper, John Cooper’s son. BMW later acquired the rights to the name and integrated JCW performance products into the modern Mini range. These upgrades have included engine tuning, revised exhaust and intake systems, sportier suspension, performance brakes and distinctive aerodynamic equipment.

JCW is easy to confuse with BMW M, Mercedes-AMG or Alpina because all are performance divisions associated with German manufacturers. However, those names belong to other marques: BMW M serves BMW cars, AMG serves Mercedes-Benz, and Alpina historically specialized in BMW-based performance cars. JCW is the name specifically associated with high-performance Mini models and accessories.
