Which disciple did Jesus say would deny knowing him three times?

The story behind the answer

Jesus said that Peter would deny knowing him three times.

The prediction appears in all four canonical Gospels. Jesus makes it during the events leading to his arrest, telling Peter that before the rooster crows, Peter will deny him three times. Peter initially insists that he will remain loyal, even if it means dying with Jesus.

After Jesus is arrested, people in the high priest’s courtyard identify Peter as one of Jesus’ followers. Peter denies the connection three times. The Gospel accounts differ in some details about the people who question him and the timing of the rooster’s crow, but they agree on the central sequence.

The episode is different from Judas Iscariot’s betrayal. Judas identifies Jesus to the arresting party, while Peter denies being associated with him. Later, in John’s Gospel, the risen Jesus asks Peter three times whether he loves him, a scene often understood as a narrative counterpart to the three denials.
