Marco Arment worked with David Karp on Tumblr before later leaving the company to work on Instapaper.
Arment joined Karp at Davidville, Karp’s software consulting business, after responding to a Craigslist advertisement. During a gap between client contracts in 2006, the pair began building a short-form blogging platform inspired by tumblelogs. That project became Tumblr and launched in February 2007.
Arment was Tumblr’s first employee and served as its chief technology officer during the company’s early years. His engineering work helped turn Karp’s idea into a functioning publishing platform, whose emphasis on brief posts, images, links, and reblogs distinguished it from conventional blogs.
Arment left Tumblr in September 2010 and went on to work on Instapaper, a service for saving web articles to read later. The distractor names are prominent technology figures, but none matches this specific Tumblr-to-Instapaper career path.
