John Galliano made Celine Dion’s white suit worn backward at the 1999 Academy Awards.
Dion wore the white satin Christian Dior suit with its jacket reversed, so the buttoned front appeared at her back. She paired it with a matching fedora, sunglasses, and a diamond necklace while performing “The Prayer” at the ceremony.
Galliano was serving as Dior’s creative director at the time, and the look reflected the designer’s theatrical approach to tailoring. Dion later explained that she wanted to wear the suit differently from the way it was shown, turning a formal menswear-inspired design into an intentionally unconventional red-carpet statement.
The outfit is sometimes attributed simply to Dior, which is the fashion house, but the requested designer credit is John Galliano. The ceremony was the 71st Academy Awards, held in 1999.
