Rihanna wore a sheer, crystal-covered gown designed by Adam Selman when she accepted the CFDA Fashion Icon Award in New York in 2014. The garment was made from a fine mesh covered with thousands of Swarovski crystals and was accompanied by a matching headscarf and gloves.
Selman was a longtime collaborator of Rihanna’s, including work on custom stage and music-video clothing. The look demonstrated how a fashion-award appearance could function as a performance of celebrity image as well as formal eveningwear.
The outfit is sometimes confused with Rihanna’s other transparent red-carpet looks, especially her 2015 Met Gala ensemble. The silver crystal dress belongs specifically to the 2014 CFDA ceremony, where the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored Rihanna as a fashion icon.
