Guo Pei created Rihanna’s dramatic yellow cape worn at the 2015 Met Gala.
Rihanna wore the embroidered yellow cape to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit, whose theme was “China: Through the Looking Glass.” The garment featured an extensive train and ornate floral embroidery, making it difficult to capture in a single photograph.
The Chinese couturier Guo Pei designed the piece for her haute couture collection. Rihanna discovered the work after seeing images online and selected the look for the gala, bringing Guo Pei’s fashion to a much broader international audience.
The gown is often casually called a dress, but it was presented as a cape-like couture garment with a long train. The event took place in 2015, not at an awards ceremony such as the Oscars or Grammys.
