Adam Selman created Rihanna’s crystal-covered dress for the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards.
Rihanna wore the transparent, crystal-embellished gown while accepting the Fashion Icon Award at the 2014 Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards. The dress was covered with more than 200,000 Swarovski crystals and was paired with a matching head covering and gloves.
American designer Adam Selman created the look. Rihanna and Selman had an established creative relationship, and he had worked on costumes and stage looks for her before the CFDA appearance. The outfit became especially notable because the crystals offered shimmer while leaving much of the wearer’s body visible.
The CFDA Fashion Awards recognize major contributions to American fashion. Rihanna’s award acknowledged her influence on style beyond music, and the dress became one of the most widely reproduced images from the ceremony. Reports sometimes round the crystal count differently, but the commonly cited figure is more than 200,000.
