Sergio Lozano created Nike’s Air Max 95, whose layered upper was inspired by human anatomy.
Released in 1995, the shoe was designed with a dark-to-light color scheme and overlapping panels that suggested muscles, ribs, and tendons. Lozano also used visible Air cushioning in both the heel and forefoot, an important development for the Air Max line.
The original “Neon” colorway paired black and gray with bright Volt yellow accents. Its unconventional appearance initially differed from the cleaner white designs common in running footwear, but the bold style became highly influential in sneaker culture.
The Air Max 95 is often confused with the Air Max 97 because both have sculpted, layered uppers. Christian Tresser designed the 1997 model, while Sergio Lozano designed the 1995 shoe. Tinker Hatfield designed the earlier Air Max 1.
