Hipgnosis created the cover art for Black Sabbath’s Technical Ecstasy.
Technical Ecstasy, Black Sabbath’s seventh studio album, was released in October 1976 after the band recorded it at Criteria Studios in Miami. The artwork fit the album’s experimental title: two stylized robots appear in an intimate encounter on an escalator, combining industrial machinery with an intentionally strange, humorous image.
Hipgnosis was the influential London design group founded primarily by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. The group became famous for imaginative, often surreal album packaging, especially for Pink Floyd, and also designed covers for artists including Led Zeppelin, Genesis, UFO, and Black Sabbath.
A common mix-up is crediting the individual artists separately. George Hardie assisted with the robot design, while Richard Manning handled the robot drawing, but the overall sleeve design was credited to Hipgnosis. The album itself also marked a stylistic change: drummer Bill Ward sang “It’s Alright,” the band’s first studio track not led by Ozzy Osbourne.
