The Black Sabbath song played over the end credits of the 2008 film Iron Man is “Iron Man.”
The placement is a deliberate connection between Marvel’s armored hero and one of heavy metal’s most recognizable riffs. The track appears as the main film ends, following Tony Stark’s public declaration, “I am Iron Man.” It is separate from Ramin Djawadi’s original score and from the big-band arrangement of the 1966 animated-series theme heard earlier in the movie.
Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” originally appeared on the band’s 1970 album Paranoid. Despite its later association with Marvel, the song was not written about the comic-book character. Ozzy Osbourne reportedly described Tony Iommi’s heavy riff as sounding like an iron figure walking, inspiring the title; Geezer Butler then wrote lyrics about a time-travelling metal man.
A common mix-up is “Back in Black,” which opens an earlier driving sequence, or the orchestral animated-series theme. Neither is the Black Sabbath recording heard during the closing credits.
