Which desert is associated with the Ténéré Tree, once famous as one of the world’s most isolated trees?

The story behind the answer

The Ténéré Tree was associated with the Ténéré Desert in central Niger.

The Ténéré is a vast, exceptionally arid region of the southern Sahara. For centuries it served as a difficult route across the desert, and the lone acacia known as the Ténéré Tree became a vital navigational landmark for caravans and later for motorists.

The tree stood hundreds of kilometres from other trees and was often described as the most isolated tree on Earth. Its survival was remarkable because its roots reached a deep water table, allowing it to live in a landscape with almost no surface water.

In 1973, a truck driver accidentally struck and destroyed the tree. Its remains were later placed in Niger’s National Museum in Niamey. A metal sculpture and memorial now mark its former location, preserving the story of the tree and the desert routes it helped guide.
