Which desert in Oregon is known for the Alvord Playa, a vast dry lake bed?

The story behind the answer

The Oregon desert known for the Alvord Playa, a vast dry lake bed, is the Alvord Desert.

The Alvord Desert lies in southeastern Oregon between the Steens Mountain range and the Alvord Hot Springs area. At its centre is the Alvord Playa, a broad, exceptionally flat basin formed from sediments left by an ancient lake. The playa becomes especially smooth and pale during dry periods.

The basin is part of the northern Great Basin, where enclosed valleys and mountain ranges create a dry interior landscape. Rainfall is limited because surrounding mountains block moisture, while summer temperatures can be very high and winter nights can be bitterly cold.

The Alvord Playa is used for recreation, photography, camping, and occasional speed trials, but conditions can change quickly. Visitors often mistake the Alvord Desert for Oregon’s better-known Black Rock Desert in Nevada. They are separate playas in different states, although both attract vehicles and desert travellers.
