Which desert in Jordan is famous for red sand and dramatic sandstone mountains?

The story behind the answer

Jordan’s desert famous for red sand and dramatic sandstone mountains is the Wadi Rum Desert.

Wadi Rum is a broad desert valley in southern Jordan, shaped by sandstone and granite mountains. Wind erosion and occasional flash floods carved cliffs, arches, narrow canyons, and rock bridges across the landscape. Its reddish sands come partly from iron-rich material weathering from the surrounding rocks.

The area has been inhabited for thousands of years. Archaeologists have documented petroglyphs and inscriptions left by cultures including the Nabataeans. The Bedouin people of the region have traditionally guided visitors and maintained strong cultural ties to the desert.

Wadi Rum is sometimes called the Valley of the Moon. It became internationally famous as a filming location for Lawrence of Arabia and later science-fiction films. The protected area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 for both natural and cultural value.
