Which desert contains Death Valley, the lowest point in North America?

The story behind the answer

The Mojave Desert contains Death Valley, the lowest point in North America.

Death Valley’s Badwater Basin reaches about 86 metres below sea level, and the valley lies within the Mojave Desert of the southwestern United States. The Mojave occupies parts of southeastern California, southern Nevada, southwestern Utah, and northwestern Arizona.

The desert is defined partly by its vegetation, especially the Joshua tree, which is native to the Mojave and gives Joshua Tree National Park its name. Mountain ranges and enclosed basins create strong contrasts between high, cooler areas and extremely hot lowlands.

Death Valley is also famous for its heat. On 10 July 1913, the Furnace Creek area recorded 56.7°C, a measurement recognised by the World Meteorological Organization as the highest officially recorded air temperature. The valley’s salt flats formed as ancient lakes evaporated and left minerals behind.
