Renzo Rosso founded the Italian denim brand Diesel in 1978.
Rosso established Diesel in Molvena, in Italy’s Veneto region, during a period when premium denim was beginning to develop as an international fashion category. The brand became known for unconventional washes, distinctive advertising, and jeans positioned above ordinary workwear in price and styling.
Diesel’s rise helped broaden the geography of denim fashion. Although blue jeans originated in American workwear and were strongly associated with American brands, Italian companies became influential in fabric development, finishing, tailoring, and luxury-oriented presentation.
Diesel is sometimes confused with similarly named or similarly positioned European denim brands. Its defining founding fact is the 1978 creation by Renzo Rosso. The brand later expanded into clothing, accessories, and other fashion categories while retaining denim as a central identity.
