Ravana is the epic’s principal antagonist and the rakshasa ruler of Lanka. After abducting Rama’s wife, Sita, and carrying her to Lanka, Ravana provoked the conflict that drives the story’s final books. Rama gathered an alliance that included his brother Lakshmana, the vanara king Sugriva, and Hanuman’s forces.

The war culminates in a prolonged battle between Rama and Ravana. In the Valmiki Ramayana, Rama ultimately kills Ravana with a powerful divine weapon and rescues Sita. Ravana is commonly depicted with ten heads, a visual symbol of his formidable power and wide-ranging knowledge.
