Traditions describe Kubera as the son of Vishrava and the half-brother of Ravana, the antagonist of the Ramayana. Kubera originally ruled Lanka, but Ravana drove him out. He later established his residence at Alaka in the Himalayas and is often identified as a guardian of the northern direction.

Kubera is commonly shown with a large belly, jewels, a money bag, a pot of treasure, or a mongoose. Lakshmi is the goddess most closely associated with prosperity and fortune, so she is a frequent quiz mix-up. Kubera’s role is more specifically that of treasurer, custodian, and distributor of riches, while Lakshmi represents auspiciousness, abundance, and good fortune.
