The Milwaukee Deep is commonly cited as the Atlantic Ocean’s deepest point in the Puerto Rico Trench.

The trench lies north of Puerto Rico at the complex boundary between the Caribbean and North American plates. Its deepest area is roughly 8,376 metres below sea level by modern direct measurement, although older surveys produced different figures.

The name comes from USS Milwaukee, which recorded an important echo sounding in 1939. The surrounding seabed is also called Brownson Deep, and modern sources sometimes use Brownson Deep and Milwaukee Deep interchangeably. That naming overlap can cause confusion, but Milwaukee Deep remains the standard quiz answer for the Atlantic’s deepest point.

Victor Vescovo made the first crewed descent to the site in December 2018 aboard DSV Limiting Factor. The Puerto Rico Trench is also scientifically important because movement along its plate boundary can generate powerful earthquakes and tsunamis near Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
