Answer
Potsdam Declaration
Answer
Potsdam Declaration
The Potsdam Declaration outlined the Allied terms that Japan accepted in August 1945.
Issued on July 26, 1945, the declaration was released by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China during the Potsdam Conference. It demanded the unconditional surrender of Japan’s armed forces and warned of “prompt and utter destruction” if Japan refused.
The declaration called for Japan’s militarism to be eliminated, its armed forces to be disarmed, and its sovereignty to be limited to the home islands and other territories designated by the Allies. It did not explicitly state what would happen to Emperor Hirohito, an omission that contributed to uncertainty in Japan.
Japan initially did not accept the declaration. After the atomic bombings, the Soviet declaration of war, and further political debate, the Japanese government accepted its terms. The Japanese Instrument of Surrender later referred directly to the declaration.
