On what date did Japan sign a separate surrender agreement with China in Nanjing?

The story behind the answer

Japan signed a separate surrender agreement with China in Nanjing on September 9, 1945.

The ceremony took place four days after the principal surrender aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Lieutenant General He Yingqin accepted the surrender on behalf of the Republic of China, while General Okamura Yasutsugu represented Japanese forces in China.

China had fought Japan for more than eight years, beginning with the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in July 1937 and continuing through the wider Pacific conflict. Japanese forces occupied large areas of China, making a distinct Chinese surrender ceremony necessary for Japanese units operating there.

The Nanjing event should not be confused with the September 2 ceremony, which ended Japan’s war with the main Allied powers. Separate local surrender ceremonies followed in other parts of Asia and the Pacific as Japanese forces formally reported to regional Allied commanders.
