Princess Beatrice was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s youngest child. She was born at Buckingham Palace on 14 April 1857, the couple’s ninth and final child and their fifth daughter.

Beatrice’s arrival came as her older siblings were growing up and beginning to leave the royal household. Her father described her as an especially amusing baby, while Victoria affectionately called her “Baby.” After Prince Albert died in 1861, the Queen became increasingly dependent on Beatrice’s companionship.

Unlike several of her sisters, Beatrice remained closely attached to her mother well into adulthood. She eventually married Prince Henry of Battenberg in 1885, but only after Victoria agreed on the condition that the couple live near her and that Beatrice continue serving as her companion and unofficial secretary.

Beatrice had four children, including Victoria Eugenie, who became queen of Spain. She also edited and preserved many of Queen Victoria’s journals. Beatrice died in 1944, making her the last of Victoria’s children to survive.
