Which daughter of Victoria married the Marquess of Lorne?

The story behind the answer

Princess Louise, later Duchess of Argyll, was the daughter of Victoria who married the Marquess of Lorne.

Louise married John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, on 21 March 1871 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. He was heir to the Duke of Argyll, and Louise became Marchioness of Lorne. Their marriage was notable because she married a British subject rather than a foreign prince, breaking with a long royal-marriage tradition.

The couple later played an important role in Canada. When Lorne became Governor General in 1878, Louise accompanied him as viceregal consort and lived at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. Her Canadian connection is remembered in names such as Lake Louise and the province of Alberta, whose name reflects one of her middle names.

Louise was Victoria and Prince Albert’s fourth daughter. Princess Alice, Princess Beatrice and Princess Helena also married, but none became the wife of the Marquess of Lorne.
