Which Danish university, founded in 1479, is the oldest university in Denmark?

The story behind the answer

The University of Copenhagen, founded in 1479, is the oldest university in Denmark.

King Christian I received papal authorization for the university, and teaching began in Copenhagen in the late 15th century. It was established as a Catholic institution, but the Reformation later transformed its religious and academic organization. Today it is a public research university.

The university has faculties covering health and medical sciences, humanities, law, science, and social sciences. Its main facilities are spread across Copenhagen rather than concentrated on one traditional campus. It is one of the major research institutions in the Nordic region.

The University of Copenhagen is older than Denmark’s other major universities, including Aarhus University, founded in 1928. It should not be confused with Lund University in Sweden, which was founded in 1666, or the University of Oslo, founded in 1811.
