Which Danish pharmaceutical company makes the diabetes medicine Ozempic and the obesity medicine Wegovy?

The story behind the answer

Novo Nordisk makes the diabetes medicine Ozempic and the obesity medicine Wegovy.

Novo Nordisk is a Danish pharmaceutical company headquartered in Bagsværd, near Copenhagen. Its history is closely linked to insulin: Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium began producing insulin in the 1920s, and the modern company was formed through the 1989 merger of Novo Industri and Nordisk Gentofte.

Ozempic is the brand name for semaglutide used to improve blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Wegovy contains the same active ingredient but is approved for chronic weight management at a different dosing regimen. Both medicines belong to the GLP-1 class.

The two brand names are often confused because they share semaglutide. They are not interchangeable labels for every purpose, however: approved indications, doses, and prescribing rules differ by jurisdiction.
