Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company behind Ozempic and Wegovy, became one of Europe’s most valuable companies by market capitalization.
Novo Nordisk was formed in 1989 through the merger of two Danish healthcare companies, Novo Industri and Nordisk Gentofte. It became especially prominent through medicines for diabetes and obesity. Ozempic is a semaglutide medicine approved for type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is a semaglutide product approved for chronic weight management in eligible patients.
Strong demand for these treatments significantly increased investor interest and helped lift Novo Nordisk’s market capitalization. Market capitalization is the share price multiplied by the number of outstanding shares, so it can change every trading day.
A common mix-up is treating Ozempic and Wegovy as identical products. They contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but have different approved uses, dosing arrangements, and branding. The company also makes insulin and other diabetes treatments.
