Which Danish king is associated with the Jelling stones and the Christianization of Denmark?
Answer
Harald Bluetooth
Answer
Harald Bluetooth
Harald Bluetooth is the Danish king associated with the Jelling stones and the Christianization of Denmark. He ruled Denmark during the 10th century and also controlled Norway for part of his reign.
The larger Jelling stone, raised by Harald, states that he won all Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian. This runestone is sometimes called Denmark’s birth certificate because its inscription links royal power, territorial rule, and religious change. The Jelling monuments are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Harald’s nickname is recorded in Old Norse as blátǫnn, traditionally translated as Bluetooth. The modern wireless technology took its name from the king because its creators wanted a symbol of connecting different systems. Harald was the father of Sweyn Forkbeard, who later became king of Denmark and England.
