Which Danish author wrote the memoir and book Out of Africa?
Answer
Karen Blixen
Answer
Karen Blixen
Karen Blixen wrote the memoir and book Out of Africa.
Blixen published Out of Africa in 1937 under the pen name Isak Dinesen. The book recalls her years running a coffee farm in British East Africa, in what is now Kenya, between 1914 and 1931. It combines personal memories with descriptions of the landscape, colonial society, workers, and people she encountered.
Born Karen Christentze Dinesen in Denmark in 1885, she became internationally known through fiction and memoir. Her other major works include Seven Gothic Tales and Babette’s Feast. She wrote primarily in English and Danish, often publishing different versions in the two languages.
Out of Africa later inspired the 1985 film directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. The film is not a literal retelling of every episode in the book, so the author and the film’s director are sometimes mistakenly credited with the same work.
