Which cyclist won the men's road race at the 1896 Athens Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Aristidis Konstantinidis won the men’s road race at the 1896 Athens Olympics.

The race was held on 12 April 1896 during the first modern Olympic Games. Competitors rode from Athens to Marathon and back, covering roughly 87 kilometres. Konstantinidis, representing Greece, finished first in the event’s only road race.

The course was demanding by modern standards. Riders faced unpaved roads, basic bicycles and limited mechanical support. German cyclist August von Gödrich finished second, while Britain’s Edward Battell was listed as third in the historical results.

Cycling was included in the 1896 programme alongside track events. The Olympic road race later developed into one of the sport’s major international competitions, although the format, distance and eligibility rules changed substantially across the twentieth century.
