Logan Martin won the men’s BMX freestyle park gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The Australian rider won the inaugural Olympic men’s BMX freestyle park competition at Ariake Urban Sports Park in Tokyo. The event was held in 2021 after the Games were postponed from 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
BMX freestyle park differs from BMX racing. Riders perform timed runs on ramps and other obstacles, and judges award scores for difficulty, execution, height, originality and overall performance. BMX racing, by contrast, is a head-to-head race around a dirt track.
Martin earned the highest score in the Olympic final, finishing ahead of Venezuela’s Daniel Dhers, who won silver, and Great Britain’s Declan Brooks, who won bronze. BMX freestyle made its Olympic debut in Tokyo for both men and women. Martin had already won major international BMX freestyle titles before becoming the event’s first Olympic champion.
