Which cyclist won the 2018 Giro d’Italia, becoming the first rider to hold all three Grand Tour titles simultaneously?

The story behind the answer

Chris Froome won the 2018 Giro d’Italia, becoming the first cyclist to hold all three Grand Tour titles simultaneously.

Froome entered the race having won the 2017 Tour de France and 2017 Vuelta a España. His Giro victory completed the set of cycling’s three-week stage races, although the titles were not won in the same calendar year. The Giro victory also made him the first British winner of the event.

Froome took control during the 19th stage, a demanding mountain route from Venaria Reale to Bardonecchia. He attacked on the Colle delle Finestre and finished the stage with a decisive advantage over Tom Dumoulin, who placed second overall. Froome retained the pink leader’s jersey through the finish in Rome.

The three Grand Tours are the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España. Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Vincenzo Nibali had previously won all three during their careers, but Froome was the first to hold them concurrently.
